EXPERIENCE DRIVING IN RAINY SEASON
Driving in stormy weather has never been pleasant for drivers. If it is forced to drive during the rainy or typhoon season, the drivers need to pay attention to some driving experience to protect themselves, their families and their loved ones.
In this article, Green Leaf Vietnam will share with you some tips for you to keep in mind when driving in the typhoon season.
Periodic car maintenance, car inspection before each trip
For any type of vehicle after a period of use, it is difficult to avoid deterioration, details and components of the car wear out, … If they are not periodically checked, replaced and maintained, the operational features will be reduced, leading to heavy damage and even unsafety during use.
Regular maintenance of the car according to the manufacturer’s regulations is extremely important for your car. This helps the vehicle to operate stably and safely, prolonging the life of the vehicle. In addition, periodic maintenance also helps car owners detect and replace damaged components when necessary, helping to avoid undesirable consequences
Before each trip, the driver should also take a little time to inspect the vehicle before departure to ensure the best operation and safety for themselves and those around them. Items to check before each trip include:
- Check around the body: Before getting into the car and start the engine, the operator should go to check if the wheels are cracked, broken, the shell lacks air or is hit by sharp objects by accident.
- Check the signal light system: Signal lights play a very important role in the operation and movement process. Items checked include cos, headlights, brake and turn signal lights, fog lights. The signal light is a part that is easily damaged after 1 time of use. Signal lights play an important role in vehicle operation, especially in evening operating conditions, or in rainy season, … In addition, checking the signal lights also helps us not to “lose money unconditionally” when encountering traffic checkpoints.
- Check the brakes, accelerator pedal before departure: Checking the brakes to make sure they work normally. It only takes about 3 seconds to do this so don’t skip it
- Check the coolant, add glass washer
Learn your route before you travel
Checking the route and determining the location of travel will help the driver be more proactive in bad weather situations. Drivers can avoid roads that are at risk of flooding, landslides, or traffic jams, …
Tip: Drivers can download the Google map application to their phones, enter the destination, traffic jams, flooding routes are warned by Google and suggest alternative routes.
EXPERIENCE HOW TO DRIVE IN STORMY SEASON, FLOODING SAFELY
1.Maintain an appropriate distance from vehicles ahead:
Keeping a safe distance while driving on the road is extremely important to ensure the safety of vehicle drivers, especially in bad weather conditions. Walking close and not ensuring a safe distance will limit observation, not enough time to handle situations or slowdown in time, which can lead to severe consequences related to materials and human.
2.If possible, try to observe the path of the car ahead so that you can actively avoid the uncertainties that the previous car has encountered. Judge the water level based on observing the vehicles moving ahead to make timely decisions.
- Do not go near large trucks, as splashes of water from large wheels will reduce your visibility. However, do not try to overtake when you are not sure of the visibility and acceleration of your car.
- Turn on the low/high beam headlights (cos) or fog lights even when the rain is light as well as when it is overcast. This not only gives you a better view of the road, but also helps other drivers see you clearly. It is not recommended to turn on the headlights when there is a car driving opposite because it will endanger both in traffic.
- If conditions allow, let drive in the middle of the lane, because 2 sides of the road often get sunken, the amount of water is more flooded.
- It is not recommended to exceed the visibility range; heavy rain will limit the driver’s vision. There have been quite a few cases of “that’s not the way it seems to be” causing unfortunate accidents.

7.When traveling in a flooded area, keep the engine speed (rpm) high to avoid water entering the exhaust pipe, causing the car to “stall”. For manual cars, it is recommended to leave 1st gear, and for automatic cars with numbers D1, D2, switch to D1, try to keep the highest rpm at the as high as possible level.
8.When the water level is half full of tires – that is, the limit should not be crossed; With a high undercarriage, it is possible to pass but not allow water to spill through the front bumper of the car into the air vents and engine. For low undercarriage vehicles such as Sedan, 4-seater cars, the driver can drift the car, lose control in flooded area…

9. When passing through a flooded area, try to avoid the moment when there is a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction. Two vehicles traveling in opposite directions will create waves or splash water back on the hood, causing a risk of water entering the intake manifold and engine compartment.
10. Do not launch high-speed vehicles into puddles, as it is easy for water to splash into the intake manifold, as well as create “water waves”, dangerous for other vehicles.
11. When the car enters a flooded road and suddenly stalls, it is absolutely forbidden to restart the engine, because the machine will no longer be able to restart, but will bend the connecting rod and break the engine wall. At that time, what needs to be done is to turn off the car engine immediately, do not restart the engine, if possible, unplug the dry battery to protect the vehicle’s electrical equipment.
12. When driving through a flooded area: you should turn off all unnecessary load equipment such as air conditioning system, sound to reduce the load on the engine.
13. Avoid rushing into puddles, endangering yourself and other vehicles.
14. When the car stalls, observe whether the water level has crossed the edge of the floor, if it is higher, absolutely do not open the door, because water will flood inside, damage the electronic systems, interior materials such as felt, leather, wood.
15. When overcoming a flood, you should lightly step on the brake pedal to check the brakes, removing water from the disc.
16. Always save at least one traffic rescue phone number in case necessary.
